Netflix Just Told Everyone They Use AI in 300 Shows This Year

Netflix dropped their Q2 2026 shareholder letter last week and buried inside it was the sentence that every VFX artist, every indie filmmaker, every person paying attention already knew: they use generative AI in roughly 300 titles this year. Three hundred. That is not a small number. That is not a test. That is a company running AI workflows through the majority of their content pipeline and saying it out loud.
Where the AI actually lives
Netflix was specific about this. The AI is not some side experiment tucked in a corner. They said they use it from concept and pre-visualization all the way through post and delivery. That means storyboarding, concept art, previs, VFX work, rotoscoping, chroma keying, compositing, final delivery. The whole pipeline has generative AI baked into it.
If you have worked in VFX for any amount of time, this makes sense. Tools like ComfyUI have gotten good enough that running AI assisted rotoscoping or chroma keying is not some experimental thing anymore. It is faster. It is cheaper. And now it is production ready. Netflix looked at that reality and went all in.
The real kicker? They said some shots flat out would not exist without generative AI. Not that they would have looked different. Not that they would have taken longer. They would not exist. The productions would have cut them entirely because of time and budget constraints. AI made those shots possible. It expanded what these shows could look like.
So who is actually angry about this?
The anti-AI crowd in Hollywood has been loud for a while now. Fair enough. People worried about jobs, about the soul of filmmaking, about studios cutting corners. Those concerns are real. But Netflix just showed the other side of that equation.
These are shots that would never have made it to screen. The work that went into making them still required artists, directors, producers, editors. The AI handled parts of the process so the humans could focus on the parts that actually matter. More shots completed means more work for everyone involved in the production, not less.
What this means for people who want to work in film
Netflix is hiring like crazy for AI related roles. The salaries are high. The demand is real. They are building workflows that mix generative AI with traditional animation and VFX. And they are not the only ones. Amazon, A24, Apple, Google, basically every major player in the entertainment industry is doing the same thing.
If you are a VFX artist and you are not already familiar with ComfyUI, with generative media pipelines, with building your own AI assisted workflows, you are behind. I am not going to sugarcoat that. The industry moved while people were arguing about whether it should move. Netflix just confirmed what everyone suspected: the studios are using AI and they are not going to stop.
The bigger picture
This is not just about Netflix. This is about a shift in how content gets made at scale. The old way of doing things where every shot had to be manually created from start to finish, where budgets ballooned because of VFX-heavy sequences, where indie filmmakers could not afford the same tools as big studios, that way is changing. Generative AI is flattening the playing field and the biggest companies in entertainment are proving it works.
Netflix saying this publicly is a big deal. They did not hide it in some footnote. They put it in a shareholder letter, which means they see AI as a feature, not something to apologize for. They are scaling it quickly. They are using it everywhere. And they are hiring people who know how to build these workflows.
If you want to work in film, in VFX, in animation, in storytelling of any kind, the message is clear: get comfortable with generative AI. Not because it is going to replace you. Because it is going to be the tool you use to do your best work.
